PASSAN VELOCI L'ORE

The opening lines of Antonio Bembo’s Passan veloci l’ore really rings true in the context of this seemingly never-ending pandemic.

The hours pass by quickly
and yet that time does not arrive.

Time during this pandemic has simultaneously felt frozen and also like it’s flying by at lightning speed. Everyone I know seems constantly stressed and overwhelmed by the increasing amount of responsibilities we seem to have in both the virtual and real worlds, and we all seem to be hoping for some sort of “end” of this pandemic to arrive, and yet as new variants continue to tear through us, that light at the end of the tunnel seems farther and farther away.

ANTONIA BEMBO: Passan veloci l’ore with Brandon Acker, lutes | Craig Trompeter, viola da gamba | Mark Shuldiner, harpsichord

I still hold out hope that it’s coming and this is a home stretch, of sorts.

If you’re in San Francisco on January 20th, I am very much looking forward to performing this piece by Antonia Bembo again at the first installment of San Francisco Performances’ 2021 Salon Series, which will explore nearly 5 centuries of music by women composers over the course of four salon recitals this month and next. Please come join us, if you’re boosted (a requirement for entry to the War Memorial) and in the Bay Area.

Perhaps it will feel like that time we are all waiting for is actually nigh…
