BAROQUE COMFORT

#WayBackWednesday to a rehearsal of some Buxtehude with Ruckus Early Music and special guest violinists Owen Dalby and Katie Hyun preparing for the very first filming session of BACH 52 with Noe Music in May of 2022.

For me, Buxtehude’s cantata, “Herr, wenn ich nur dich hab’ “ is a hope-filled prayer turning to whatever higher being is out there for some comfort. The world could definitely use some solace these days, and I think I am drifting towards this musical memory a lot this week, because Buxtehude’s music is a ray of sunlight in what feel like increasingly dark and terrifying times.

After our concert last May, a gentleman came up to me and said that his mother insisted that the piece be played at her funeral - a wish they honored when she passed. I can see why one might turn to this piece in a time of grief…and it just feels like there is more and more to grieve with each day that passes these last handful of years.

I’m grateful for music and these inspiring colleagues. And for Buxtehude, who doesn’t get enough listenings these days, if you ask me.

Translation of the text (in case you’re not a German speaker):

Lord, Lord, if I have You alone,

I do not care for heaven and earth here.

If life and limb shall pass away,

still You will always be, o Lord,

comforting my heart,

still You will always be, o Lord,

comforting my heart and my soul.
